What evidence does Abramsky use to support his ideas?
Abramsky uses a lot of statics and very useful information
to support his ideas. He also gives a lot of stories on how he can relate to
these. He uses and point out information that comes from other credible
sources. When a author uses a lot of statistics and has a lot of other
references and material that has been published it really makes you trust what
you are reading. If I am reading something and it doesn’t have a lot of facts
or statistics and not a lot is references I sometimes question how true the
article is that I am reading. I like how he includes in personal stories. I love
when authors do that it really helps you relate with what they are talking
about and the readers get a chance to see inside the author’s life a little
bit. I like how he used a mixture of statistics and personal stories because it
kept me very interested.
When did attitudes towards welfare recipients shift in the
U.S.?
I think that in today’s society people are looked down upon
when they receive welfare because the system is so abused that people would
rather sit at home all day and feed off the government and get as much
handbacks as they can get without having to work. When a young person in their
20’s can sit at home all day and get assistance to pay bills, and then get LINK
money and cash assistance, they are abusing it and that is what makes these
hard working people so mad is because they break their backs at work and barely
have anything and people who choose not to work can get everything. In the book
welfare started getting looked down upon in the Reagan time. He was wanting to
stop the abuse to the system and then Bush came into presidency and kicked
people out and was pushing for people to get jobs and help themselves. The
books mentions that they were trying to help these single moms if they were
trying to help themselves. I think this is how it should work, if you have a
job and work and you still need a little help to get by for a short amount of
time, this is what these programs are made for, not life- time use.
Why are most poor individuals and families concentrated in
the southern part of the country?
The southern part of the country are not getting appropriate
healthcare coverage. This area is flooded with rural poverty and not a lot of
means to help them be financially secure. There is a lack of jobs and education
available. In the south they also have a really low tax system. When there is
not a lot of access to good jobs or education, people are bound to live in
poverty and never have a chance to better themselves. I wish that we were all
exposed to the same things so everyone can have a chance at having a good life
and not living in poverty, especially children. Some of these children will
never get eo experience a normal life due to living in poverty. The lack of
healthcare in the south is really sad and I think that no one should have to go
without adequate healthcare.
