Blog #2 Danielle Sheehy

  •                In chapter 4, Abramsky list and state many key points about issues that our nation and society are lacking which goes back into poverty. Certain things stuck out to me through out chapter four. For example, in chapter 4 on page 103 it stated, "By the time the economy had the rug pulled out from under it in 2008, the plight of America's poor had become something of a political footnote". My reaction to this was not shocking because it lets me know how we are still lacking money, and the poor are still suffering. Also, it lets me know poverty will remain the same if no one steps up and change their political views and opinions.
  •  Another key point that stuck out to me was Jessica Bartholow view on poverty. On page 111, in chapter four, she states "Below 50 percent of the poverty line, we're putting kids in extreme danger- they're going to the hospital more often, missing school, missing opportunity at a great rate". I absolutely agree. I agree because if the parents are in poverty, it puts the the children in danger and then they begin to suffer, It makes it difficult to navigate as a child and focus when you going through that level of poverty. My reaction remains the same.

  • Another key point that stood out to me was chapter six. On page 168, Joseph's story stood out and it sadden me to read that him and his family went through a heart break. According to the book it states "In the last few years all you see is people loosing their houses. There is no jobs. When you start seeing people even having to turn off their water, and their lawns are getting brown, all of a sudden you see houses falling apart; you could see on the outside what was the hurting part on the inside of each and every one of the neighbors". My reaction to this was heart breaking because no one deserves to go through this, but because poverty exist sometimes you have no control over what happens.
